On Monday, November 11, 2024, students and staff gathered together in the gymnasium at Hawthorn Elementary to recognize and celebrate their beloved veterans. Upon arrival, veterans were warmly welcomed at the door by student greeter leaders, given commemorative pins, and led to the school cafeteria for a meet-and-greet event. Guests enjoyed donuts, fresh coffee, and conversations with students and staff who expressed their appreciation for their service.
As the veterans made their way to the stage later that morning, they were greeted by 5th-grade students lining the hallways with American flags, smiles, and heartfelt “thank you’s,” while students in kindergarten through 4th grade stood and cheered to show their admiration and gratitude.
The ceremony began with members of Hawthorn's Boys and Girl Scout troops serving as the color guard, proudly presenting the United States and Missouri flags. This was followed by the entire school community joining together to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sing a heartfelt rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner."
Several Hawthorn students were then invited to take the stage to express words of gratitude and recognition for the service of each branch of the U.S. armed forces. These moving speeches were met with applause as students honored the bravery and dedication of the military personnel who were present that day.
A significant moment in the program was dedicated to honoring those missing in action. In a solemn and respectful ceremony, students took turns setting up and explaining the symbolic POW/MIA table, describing its elements and their meanings as a tribute to those who have not returned home.
The event concluded with heartfelt applause and standing ovations, leaving both students and veterans with a sense of pride and gratitude. Hawthorn Elementary is incredibly proud of its students for recognizing the importance of honoring those who have served our country. This Veterans Day celebration not only strengthened the bond between the school community and its honored guests but also instilled a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices made by our nation's heroes.
